While the signs of alcohol addiction can be summed up quick and easily, the various signs of alcohol addiction cannot be rendered nearly as easily or neatly. Very simply put, alcohol addiction is when someone cannot manage the cravings for alcohol, they literally cannot be limited, nor can the alcohol addict place any restraint upon the amount of their drinking. An alcohol addict also must drink a larger quantity to achieve the same mood elevating results over time. Taking the simple definition further, you will find that with an alcohol addiction, a person who, upon trying to end their alcohol habit will suffer from withdrawal symptoms. The withdrawal symptoms can be minor, such as nausea or anxiety, to sometimes far more severe and dire, such as seizures and death. Let's take a look at some of the signs found with alcohol addiction.
The signs of alcohol addiction tend to fall under 2 categories, personal and public. While in the earlier stages of alcohol addiction the majority of the time the signs of the alcohol addiction may not be apparent publicly, more often they are very visible to those persons who are closest to the alcohol addict.
The family and close personal friends most often note the visible signs of alcohol addiction first. Some of the signs they may be witness to range from mild things such as consuming alcohol to the point of passing out from it, to more noticeable things such as the alcohol addict forgetting birthdays, and other personal appointments. Frequently signs include staying up late, sleeping in too often, a constant need to get a quick drink before going somewhere, or doing some activity. While some of the signs of the alcohol addiction may be glaringly obvious, very often the family and friends opt to merely ignore them.
In a more public eye, the signs of alcohol addiction tend to appear first at places such as bars, where the alcohol addict may become drunk past the point of any comprehension. The alcohol addict may stagger around outside, and if on a public street, possible become arrested for such public display of inebriation. Signs that develop into more serious situations also are found in the work place. An employee who has an alcohol addiction may call in sick to work frequently, entirely not show up for work, or worse, show up to work under the influence of alcohol. Regardless of whether publicly or privately, the signs of alcohol addiction show up, and are red flags that the addict is in need of treatment.
